Creative Sparks Art Classes

During this month’s Creative Sparks class on Saturday, January 12 from 1 – 2 p.m., children ages 5–12 will make Dragon Collage Paintings. In honor of the Chinese Year of the Dragon, and inspired by the book illustrations of Eric Carle, create fantastical fire-breathing beasts. With tons of texture, these dragons will be conjured up with a mixture of collage and paint. Fee: $5 for children and $5 for the accompanying adult (includes materials). Register by 1/5/12.

Weekday Art Classes:

Fun and educational weekday art classes for young people teach art concepts and art history. Discussions of artwork in the galleries precede the hands-on art project. Fee: $8 each or 4 classes for $28. Register 1 week in advance. Children 5 & under must be accompanied by an adult. Individualized classes can be organized by prior arrangement.

Hammonton, NJ – November 17th is third Thursday in Hammonton! The Noyes Museum Art Gallery in Hammonton is pleased to present emerging artist Julia Day in the exhibit, Beyond a Stare, Portraits by Julia Day. Julia is a Philadelphia Metro area artist currently living in New Jersey. She attended Rowan University, and graduated in 2003 with a Bachelors of Fine Art degree. Concentrations were in printmaking and painting. Her paintings reflect and contemplate the complexity of human expression (or the complexity of meaning if the subject is seemingly void of expression) as well as relationships (or lack of) with nature and with each other. Her show will feature 18 paintings; refreshments will be provided by the gallery.

The Noyes Museum of Art of the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey will hold its 15th annual fundraising gala, The Glass Ball, on September 17, 2011, from 6 – 9 PM. The glass-themed event will be centered around the intricate art of world renowned glass sculptor, Paul Stankard. Proceeds from the gala raise funds for the museum’s exhibitions, educational and public outreach programs. In addition, the event aims to raise awareness about the arts in New Jersey.

Paul Stankard, the featured artist, has been shown in over 40 prestigious museums worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institute, the Louvre, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Stankard’s work explores nature’s beauty and displays intimate representations of flowers and insects encased in glass. He will be on-site to discuss his exhibition, Poetry in Glass, on display at the Noyes Museum through January 22, 2012.

The Glass Ball will also celebrate the food and wine of California, with a bountiful selection of gourmet hors d’oeuvres and wine. Live glass working demonstrations and music provided by The Stockton Faculty Band Trio will entertain guests throughout the evening. An annual highlight of the gala is the silent auction, featuring certificates from local establishments, fine art, wine, and unique gifts. This year, exclusive items include a glass piece created by Paul Stankard for the auction, plus a week in Provence, France, provided by Seaview: A Dolce Resort. Silent auction items may be previewed at www.noyesmuseum.org. Tickets are $100 per person, $85 for Stockton faculty/staff and museum members.

In August The Noyes Museum of Art sent H.E.A.R.T. (Haiti Emergency Art Relief Team) to Haiti to engage children in art activities. Filled with hope and determination, the children of this ravaged country created brilliant paintings, story books and photographs. This exhibition presents the journey of the Noyes Museum team in photographs and the idea that art knows no boundaries. Images capture the devastated country, its cities and mountainsides, and its people trying to rebuild their lives against all odds.

Bill Horin, a commercial & art photographer, art magazine

publisher & multimedia producer, will be offering a photography special for

artists the end of this month. His offer will include photographing

(4) two-dimensional works of art or (3) three dimensional works of art.

It will also include a portrait of the artist. This portrait can be with or

without a work of art as a background or prop. Basic retouching is

included. The offer will also include a CD with web ready images

& amp; a CD with hi-res for reproduction in magazines or for giclees.

The price for this package will be $95.00 for appointments at the Noyes Museum

of Art or at his Studio in Linwood,NJ. The date for the Noyes will

Small Towns, Black Lives: African American Communities in

Southern New Jersey on view at Atlantic City Airport’s: ArtPort

A thirteen year project documenting the small, historically African American, towns and settlements of the southern counties of New Jersey is now on exhibit at the Atlantic City Airport’s: ArtPort from February 7th till April 11th, 2011. The images are photographic and text based narratives of the contemporary lives and the historical traditions of the community. White’s Journey for Small Towns began in 1989, shortly after he relocated to the area to take a teaching position at Richard Stockton College. From his first visit to Cape May County’s Whitesboro, a community founded by black entrepreneurs in the post-Reconstruction era, White realized there was more to the story. Indeed, what evolved is the visual product of an artist’s passion with his subject but he has added many other ingredients, including interviews, history, and a sense of place. The story that White unfolds, while unique, contains themes that transcend specific locales and speaks to the experience of a people and of a nation. Present in this exhibition is a small sample of the total body of work.

Wendel White received a 2009-2010 En Foco New Works Photography Fellowship; a 2009 and 1993 Artist Fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts; a 2005 grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and in 2003 he was appointed a fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

The Young Emerging Artists Project of South Jersey is a series of events that will provide opportunities for emerging artists from Southern New Jersey and the surrounding region. One Million Bones Project – Bone Making Party

In the spring of 2013, one million bones made by artists, activists and students – will flood our nation’s capitol in the One Million Bones Project created by Stockton graduate Naomi Natale. As an installation artist, photographer, and social activist she is most interested in using art to bring about and inspire social change. The One Million Bones Project aims to raise awareness about the ongoing Genocide. You can get involved, make a bone and make your voice heard, as the Noyes Museum sponsors a Bone Making Party. Donations of $5 are suggested to help fund our beneficiary organizations – Genocide Intervention Network, Enough, and Women for Women International.

Latino Art: The Retablo –

A Workshop

with Artist Marta Sanchez

During this hands-on workshop, artist Marta Sanchez will present a Powerpoint slideshow history of the traditional Latin art form of the retablo with a discussion of her adaptations of the retablo in her own artwork and a brief overview of the development of a Latino-inclusive art curriculum. We will walk into the gallery to view and discuss her work in the exhibition Suenos: Contemporary Latin American Art.

Participants will create an artwork of their own based on the retablo honoring someone of significance to their lives. We will also learn how to make cascarones, a delightful and festive Mexican and Southwestern American tradition of decorating egg shells filled with confetti.

Marta Sanchez (www.artedemarta.com) is recognized primarily for her retablo paintings, an offspring of traditional Mexican prayer paintings. These soulful works on metal capture the deepest held wishes of her subjects, as if the artist were lighting a candle for her subject. Sanchez states “My work is an ongoing narrative recording the existence of my family and friends. I strive to relate the hopes, prayers, and humanity of the common man.”

This is an enjoyable workshop and a great opportunity to gather new ideas for enriching the curriculum in the classroom, try some creative art activities and meet other teachers. The techniques covered in this workshop will work for K-12 students but are also sophisticated enough to be used by professional artists. All participants will receive handouts with instructions for the techniques involved, a list of materials and vendors for these materials.Light morning refreshments & lunch included.

DECSCRIPTION: This is a Full day workshop dealing with all concepts of perfecting your watercolor skills. The workshop will begin with a basic review of watercolor technique and we will advance through a process of demonstration with individual guidance and critique. My focus will be based on guiding the student to achieve a better understanding of concepts and techniques used to understand and to depict beach, marsh, ocean and sky as observed in the local area.

Students are asked to bring their own photos. Please bring your own supplies.

H.E.A.R.T. Haiti Emergency Art Recovery Team

Returns to the States

Charcoal drawings of faces and boats, watercolors of landscapes and the beach, book making, story-telling and photography of everyday life in the neighborhoods are a few of the examples the children created with the H.E.A.R.T team during the one week stay in Delmas Haiti. The team worked with over 125 children ages 2-19. In the morning, the team worked with the “Let the Children” Mission in Delmas and in the afternoon with a children’s center. The children and adults responded very positively to the art classes and embraced the opportunity to learn about new mediums and methods. At the end of the week, children from the mission participated in an exhibition of their work with an opening reception while the children center performed in an art parade proudly marching through the neighborhood with their creations.

The Noyes Museum will be putting together an exhibition of the children’s work at the Atlantic City Airport’s ArtPort this coming January. A full exhibition featuring paintings and sculpture celebrating Haitian Culture and a photography exhibition of Haitian life will open this January at the Noyes Museum at both the Oceanville and Hammonton locations.

Project H.E.A.R.T (Haiti Emergency Art Relief Team) is a multi-focused mission between the Noyes Museum of Art of Richard Stockton College, Vivant Art Gallery, Stockton College, Atlantic City Airport and South Jersey Transportation Authority’s ArtPort. On August 9th, a four member team traveled to Haiti, they included: Michael Cagno, Executive Director of the Noyes, who resides in Vineland, NJ; Dorrie Papademetriou, Director of Exhibitions and Collections of the Noyes, who resides in Linwood, NJ; Celeste Safeer, a Stockton College student, who resides in Hammonton, NJ; and Florcy Morrisset, owner of Vivant Art Gallery in Philadelphia, who resides in Philadelphia.

Leave the tight, drab, laborious style behind and take your landscapes to a new level.
Marie will guide you on a journey exploring your inner artist, showing you a fearless method of using the vibrancy of color, and understanding the importance of color theory and value contrasts in your work. Be amazed at the fresh, clean, luminous results when using proper brush technique and the direct painting method. Students will work on museum grounds capturing the serene beauty of Lily Lake, learning how to handle lush green foliage, and the basics of landscape composition. Students will work using triads to change mood, atmosphere, or capture the late summer season. For those wishing to paint in the cool, air-conditioned interior, the museum provides many outdoor venues from its glass windows and a new elevated deck facing Lily Lake.

Week #1 – The Nature of Art Camp*

June 28 – July 2: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (Regis. deadline: 6/14)
Explore the beautiful wooded lakeside surroundings of the Noyes Museum of Art (as weather permits), observing nature and gathering materials for your art projects during this fun camp. Participants can start an artsy nature journal, sketch nature, and make beautiful leaf rubbings and “smushings”. Make your own clay “fossils”, colorful sun catchers, recycled birdhouses and a plaster tree or animal sculpture then go “hands on” with a group finger paint mural. Instructor: C. Safeer

Week #2 – Art Around the World Camp*:

Participate in an art-filled multicultural journey to Holland, Africa, Australia, China, & Mexico. Each day students will record their ideas in a hand-crafted sketchbook, create culturally relevant art and illustrate a postcard representing their travels.
