Family Fun Day was a great success this year. Over 330 people visited the Noyes and participated in: art workshops, puppet theater, music, and

kayaking on the lake.

Over 45 Teachers participated in the Fall Teacher Professional Development Workshop. The next one is planned for the spring.

I Will Survive, an art exhibition supported in part by AtlantiCare, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the South Jersey Cultural Alliance and The Noyes Museum of Art featured the art of New Jersey breast cancer survivors, family members and/or caregivers who have been touched by the disease. The event was held on October 18th in Atlantic City. Over 400 people attended the event. The exhibition will be going to AtlantiCare Main Land Hosptial in November.

Panel Discussion: What Are Photography Judges Looking For?
Anyone who has ever entered a photo competition has probably asked themselves more than once, 'What were those judges thinking?'.

Professional photographers and frequent judges Alex Anton, Donna Connor, Bill Horin and Vernon Ogrodnek will lead a panel that attempts to answer that question and many others. July, received notice from the Conservation Center for the Art and Historic Artifacts that the Noyes has been selected to participate in a Vulnerability Assessment Program. This program is partially funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. The purpose of this assessment is to assist the museum in identifying and being prepared for potential threats and risks to the collection and to offer potential strategies for mitigating those risks.

The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts has grown to be one of the largest regional conservation laboratories in the country. Its wide array of services, sophisticated treatment facilities, innovative approaches, and highly trained and experienced staff have earned it a prominent and respected place in the conservation field.

Upcoming workshops at the Noyes:

HANDS-ON VISUAL ART PROJECT: SWEET MUD PAINTING
Utilizing the technique made famous by renowned folk artist, Jimmy Lee Sudduth, participants will create original art using a media known as “Sweet Mud,” a combination of beach sand and syrup, with added pigmentation. In the tradition of folk art, participants will paint on recycled materials such as cardboard, wood and, here at the Jersey shore, driftwood. Wear your old clothes!

HANDS-ON PERCUSSION WORKSHOP
Facilitated by percussionist Michael Hoebler, this workshop will focus on Afro-Cuban rhythms and drums, and participants will learn the basic techniques of hand drumming, utilizing a variety of different instruments. An instrument-building component will teach participants how they can build their own instruments out of found and recycled materials.

Bette Blank has a Ph.D. in Engineering from U.C. Berkeley, but her art is about the emotions and feelings of everyday life. In 2000, Blank gave up her day job to pursue painting full-time. According to the artist, it was her mother’s death which caused her finally to pursue her dream – and it prompted her to create a painting as well, “Tug of War.” In it, Blank depicted her mother’s hospital room, filled with family, medical personnel, and angels, as showing the “struggle between the living, loved ones and her dead, loved ones (angels.)” Family memories, popular culture (“Annunciation of the War in Iraq” – as seen on TV in a nail salon), and Bible stories are some of Blank’s favorite themes. State of the Arts producer Susan Wallner visits some of sites of Blank’s paintings with her – including a nail salon and two of her favorite restaurants in her hometown of Madison, New Jersey. Although her style has a naïve look, Blank has studied art at the Brooklyn Museum School of Art and the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts among other places. A resident of Madison, New Jersey, she has had solo shows in New York and New Jersey, and her work is in the permanent collection of The Jewish Museum in New York.

The Four Seasons Group visited the Noyes recently! Live Music, Art Demonstrations, and Great Food! A lot of things are happening at the Noyes!

On May 20th, the Noyes held a members only studio tour event in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. We visited 10 artists studio/live-in spaces. The artists hosted the members with lunch! More member events are currently being planned.

The Visualize Photography Foundation launches its website!

Photography is a medium of power. It moves us, beyond the mechanics of light and color. It compels, persuades, documents and entertains. It changes us as it changes the world. Founded in 2007 by working commercial photographers, the Visualize Photography Foundation was created as a resource for photographers and photography consumers, with the goal to advance the craft in all pursuits: professional, amateur, commercial and artistic.

Working in collaboration with the Noyes Museum of Art, the Foundation’s initial focus is the southeastern counties of New Jersey: Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Ocean – with short-term goals to expand to encompass photography throughout New Jersey.The Foundation develops and encourages working photographers and students of photography through collaborative and educational programs including workshops, scholarships and web resources.

Plans to expand the program will include guest lectures from photographers and other key players in the field, portfolio development, traveling exhibitions, field expeditions and publications. Through education, advocacy and professional development, the Foundation aims to raise acceptable standards to a higher level in support and cultivation of outstanding photography.

PORT REPUBIC ARTIST ERIN ENDICOTT featured IN New Exhibition Noyes Museum Continues to Feature Exhibitions of New Jersey Artists at Dante Hall in Atlantic City

OCEANVILLE, N.J. – The Noyes Museum of Art and Dante Hall continue their partnership with a new exhibition featuring Port Republic, N.J. artist and Noyes Museum Signature Artist Member Erin Endicott.

The exhibition is free and open to the public Wednesday through Saturday between noon and 4 p.m. from May 11 through June 6, 2007 at Dante Hall on Mississippi Avenue in Atlantic City. A meet-the-artist reception takes place on Friday, May 11 at Dante Hall from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. For more information please call the Noyes Museum at (609) 652-8848.

Intending to become a botanical illustrator, Endicott enrolled in Moore College of Art & Design where she began combining painting and weaving into what the artist calls “Woven Watercolors.” Endicott’s work matured to combine expressionist, figurative drawings of the human figure with multiple layers of wax to create a visual and symbolic depth. Most recently, the artist’s work has evolved into simple and emotionally-charged botanical drawings. Endicott received a bachelor’s degree from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1993 and is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in art education from The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in Galloway, N.J. Her work can be seen at The Hyder Gallery in Philadelphia as well as the Museum Shop at the Noyes Museum. Noyes spreads its wings
Museum broadens appeal with World War II art

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — There's a certain gracefulness, even a lethal beauty, to the P-47 Thunderbolt.

But is the khaki-colored World War II fighter plane art? And if not, what's it doing hanging on the wall at the Noyes Museum on Lily Lake Road in Oceanville.
There it is, tearing across a German airfield as the centerpiece of William S. Phillips' “In Through the Back Door,” coming in for a landing in Bill Levers' “Peel-off Over Millville” and flying in formation in Bill Force's “The Spirit Lives On.”
The paintings are all part of “Aviation Art — The Beauty of Flight,” an exhibition featuring prints and lithographs of the Thunderbolt and other fighters and bombers from World War II.
The exhibit isn't the kind of thing you'd expect to find at a fine art museum such as the Noyes, but that's exactly the point.
The exhibit, mounted in conjunction with the Millville Army Air Field Museum, is part of the Noyes' effort to broaden its appeal and reach out to potential patrons who might not be inclined to sample its other fare.
“It's a different way to bring people in,” said Karen DeRosa, director of communications and development for the museum. “What we hope is that once they are here, they'll stay and look at the other exhibits we have.”
By DeRosa's account, the plan is working. The museum has seen a steady stream of aviation enthusiasts and older veterans come in to check out the images of the Thunderbird and its winged companions. There are bombers over Germany in T.S. Deneen's “Attack at Bridge at the Rhine,” P-51s pulling escort duty in “Tuskegee Red-Tailed Angels” and even a few paintings of German Messerschmitts and Focke-Wulfs.
“We got a lot more interest in the show than we expected,” DeRosa admitted. “I don't know if it is that people can relate to it more, but there was a lot of interest.”
That's good news for the museum, which attracts about 15,000 visitors annually and is always looking to increase that number.
As part of that effort, the museum has set aside one wing for community art events such as the flight exhibit — events sure to appeal to a broad audience and bring bodies into the Noyes.
“We have four galleries. Two are dedicated to museum-quality professional artists, another is dedicated to showing the works of our professional members. We thought why not use the wall space to bring in what we call community art. It just makes for a better atmosphere and gives another outlet for art,” she said.
In coming weeks the community gallery will host an exhibition by students from Oakcrest High School (opening May 1) and then by Hammonton artist Betty Ann Bembry, which will run from May 15 to June 30.
The community gallery is just one example of how the Noyes has been aggressively expanding its outreach efforts since Michael Cagno came on last year as executive director.
The museum recently opened an annex at Dante Hall in Atlantic City, is involved with the ArtPort gallery project at Atlantic City International Airport and will have a presence in the new AtlantiCare facility when it opens in Atlantic City.
“This is one of the things Michael Cagno is known for. When he worked at the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts in Millville, community outreach was something he was really involved in. It's something that he's transferred here. It's all part of Michael's vision for the museum,” DeRosa said.
