“Marvelous Life in the Salt Marshes”Sunday, Oct. 5: 2 – 4 pm
A talk and walk with award-winning children’s book author, nature photographer and
naturalist Doug Wechsler
A FREE program presented by the Atlantic County Library System and the Noyes Museum of Art
Atlantic County residents are lucky to have huge areas of salt marsh nearby. But, have you looked closely to see what lives in these flooded meadows? Doug Wechsler has and he will give you an up-close look at salt marshes and their residents. He will explain why they are so important to us, as well as to the wildlife that inhabit them. Wechsler will also talk about the process of creating, writing and photographing his new book, Marvels in the Muck: Life in the Salt Marshes. Afterwards we will walk with Wechsler to a real salt marsh at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. (continued on next page)
Doug Wechsler is Director of VIREO (Video Resources for Ornithology) at the Academy of Natural Sciences. VIREO is the most comprehensive bird image bank in the world. Contributors to the collection include some of the world's most talented wildlife photographers. (www.ansp.org/research/vireo/)
Doug has written 22 books for children, entirely or partly illustrated with his photographs. His most recent book, Frog Heaven: The Ecology of a Vernal Pool, was a finalist for the American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru/SBF award and received the Green Earth Book Honor. For his next book, Marvels in the Muck: Life in the Salt Marshes, Doug paddled into numerous tidal marshes with his wife, Debbie, and his camera, photographing diamondback terrapins, clapper rails, and hoards of fiddler crabs. Explore contemporary fashion at the
Noyes Museum of Art in Oceanville
If fashion is your thing and you're going to be taking a last-minute summer trip down to the Jersey Shore this weekend and spending all day at the beach has gotten a little stale, you might want to check out the "Seams: Contemporary Art to Wear" exhibition at The Noyes Museum of Art in Oceanville - 15 minutes from Atlantic City. The exhibition only runs through Aug. Sunday. Co-curated by Toms River mixed media and textile artist Joanie San Chirico, "Seams" presents the works of 12 established and emerging artists from New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachussetts, Iowa and Canada, who create pieces using experimental textile techniques and cutting-edge technologies as well as traditional sewing and weaving.
"Seams" considers the idea of clothing as expression, identity and as a form of communication. The creative intersection of art, fashion and design is explored using a variety of materials and conceptual presentations. It highlights works in which the artist go beyond the everyday utility of clothing to confront a range of important themes such as self-expression, social connection and domestication. Included are the works of New Jersey artists Marisa Dipaola, Diana Savona and Kerr Grabowski.

The Noyes Museum of Art is Expanding!
The Noyes Museum of Art will be opening a satellite gallery in Hammonton, New Jersey for October 3rd on South 2nd Street. The NMA is now at a juncture of reinventing itself as not only a place for primarily an adult audience to passively view art, but a place for the community to have an experiential visit. This satellite would provide an exciting opportunity for the community to delve into stimulating exhibitions which will attract a diverse audience from western Atlantic and neighboring counties.
Hammonton’s Downtown is going through a renaissance! New specialty stores, cafes and restaurants have been an almost instant success. The Hammonton Art Center has been the back bone and hub for the visual arts. New streetscapes, façade improvements and a new city hall has been part of this catalyst for this economic revitalization. The proximity of major highways and passenger train station is facilitating more people to visit Hammonton. Given these monumental improvements, in a time when many downtowns are falling apart, The Noyes Museum is proud and honored to be a part a great community. To help insure its success, the gallery space will have an advisory committee composed of the museum’s board, the president of Hammonton Art Center’s Board, and community members of Hammonton.

Talk on fashions of 1800s complements fanciful new exhibit
OCEANVILLE — A lecture on fashion in the Victorian Age on Sunday at the Noyes Museum of Art added another dimension to the museum's newest show, "Seams: Contemporary Art to Wear," which opened Friday and will run until Aug. 25.On Sunday, Kristina Haugland, assistant curator, Department of Costumes and Textiles, Philadelphia Museum of Art, examined fashion of the Victorian age in her presentation, "Perfect Ladies: The Art of Dress, Beauty and Etiquette in the Victorian Age," the evolution of fashion as the social ideals of the Victorian times. The creative intersection between art, fashion and design is explored using a variety of materials and conceptual presentations. The exhibition highlights works in which the artists go beyond the everyday utility of clothing to confront a range of important themes such as, self-expression, social connection and domestication. “Seams” presents the works of 12 established and emerging artists who are creating pieces using experimental textile techniques and cutting-edge digital technologies as well as traditional sewing and weaving. Leonard Wilkinson, educated at Parson School of Design, majored in illustration. From there, he studied art at the Art Students League and Newark School of Design and Industrial Arts.
He works in pen and ink, pastel, acrylics and watercolor. He has shown his work throughout North and South Jersey, in Chicago and at the Philadelphia Black Art Expo and Atlantic City Art Center. He did a one man show at the Ocean City Art Center and has been commissioned to paint many well-known local landmarks and people.
He pursues his art on a full time basis and currently does custom framing at the local AC Moore. His presentation promises to be both interesting and informative.
Come out for an enjoyable evening of art, practical information, and refreshments.

Michael Cagno at Cape May County Art League General Meeting April 18
On Friday, April 18, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at the Old Historic Court House on Rt. 9 North in Court House, the Cape May County Art League (CMCAL) will hold its 2008 General Meeting.
Speaking at the event will be Michael Cagno, Executive Director of the Noyes Museum of Art in Oceanville. Cagno has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fine Art with a concentration in painting and Art History, and a Masters Degree in Museum Studies, as well as several Graduate Certificates.
Cagno will bring his extensive and varied background into play as he speaks on “Inside a Judge’s Mind.” He will focus on the key elements of art, but also will give importance to that first impression of a work of art, which hopefully engages the viewer in further discovery.
CMCAL Board members will be introduced, scheduled events will be announced, and there will be opportunity for suggestions regarding Art League future activities.
Light refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

Seashore Gardens Living Center, a nonprofit home for the aged, located in Galloway Township, NJ just 20 minutes outside of Atlantic City is excited to announce its collaboration with The Noyes Museum of Art. This alliance affords a unique opportunity for artists to exhibit their work at the Living Center.
Beginning Sunday, May 18-Tuesday, May 20, 2008 artists living in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware or New York are invited to present two works (that can fit on an easel). This program is open to all artists working in fine art disciplines. Artists will also have the opportunity to sell their work to the public without sales commission.

The Noyes Museum of Art and the Galloway Cultural Arts Center will present an evening with local artist Ken Woodard at the Noyes Museum on Friday, March 28 at 7 p.m. Woodard will speak about how his life, challenges and mixed heritage influence his art work. This program is free to Noyes Museum and Galloway Cultural Arts Center members and $5 for non-members. Space is limited and pre-registration is required by calling (609) 652-8848.
Woodard, a resident and native of Atlantic City, worked as a commercial artist for many years, traveling the world and living in France. Now retired and visually impaired, he spends his time painting scenes of the American Southwest, reflecting his Native American heritage. He is the recipient of many national and international awards, including the Donald Sykes Award, which is given to artists who continue to create work despite their physical challenges.
