Inspired by Homer’s Odyssey, The Princeton Artists Alliance presents visual interpretations as contemporary works of art in a new exhibition at the Noyes Museum opening January 11 and continuing through April 13, 2008. Poseidon’s wrath, Penelope’s tears and Odysseus’ escape from the Cyclops are among the struggles and triumphs captured in this exhibition. Homer’s Odyssey is a collaboration with The Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. The public can meet the artists at the Opening Reception on Friday, January 18 from 5 to 8 p.m.

In addition to the exhibition, The Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey will offer two free lectures at the Noyes Museum. On February 1 professor Kate Ogden will present The Continuing Classical Influence in Western Art from noon to 1:00 p.m. and on March 23 professor Rob Nichols will discuss How Greek is Greco-Buddhist Art from noon to 1:00 p.m.

The Princeton Artists Alliance members read Homer’s Odyssey, translated by retired Princeton University literature professor Robert Fagles, and created art inspired by passages in the classic tale. Princeton artist Marie Sturken’s handmade paper piece entitled “Outwitting the One-Eyed Giant,” which portrays men hanging from the underbellies of rams, was created after the artist read Book 9: Lines 477-487, which talks about escaping from the giant Cyclops as he slept. The exhibition is full of symbolism and contemporary views of the great literary work. Homer’s Odyssey was first exhibited at the Bristol-Myers Squibb Gallery in Princeton in 1999 and has since traveled to the Newark Museum, the Foundation for Hellenic Culture in New York and the Art Gallery at the College of New Jersey.

Founded in 1989 by professional artists, the Princeton Artists Alliance is a non-profit organization that holds various educational events to enrich the community through visual art. The Princeton Artists Alliance holds workshops, exhibits, artist talks and open art studios. The artists work with a wide range of techniques, mediums and subject matter. Each member has an extensive list of both individual and group exhibitions shown regionally, nationally and internationally. More information on the Princeton Artists Alliance can be found at http://www.princetonartists.org/. The Princeton Artists Alliance Opens Exhibition Based on Homer’s Epic

New Jersey artist W. Carl Burger opens a solo exhibition of his work on January 18 at the Noyes Museum of Art in Oceanville, N.J. The self-titled exhibition includes artwork that celebrates the natural environment of southern New Jersey. Created exclusively for this exhibition, Burger’s large-scale expressionistic works were painted in some of southern New Jersey’s most treasured natural sites including Batsto Village, the Pinelands and the Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge.

The public will have a chance to meet the artist at the Opening Reception on January 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. The exhibition will be on display through May 9.

Burger, of Califon, N.J., is one of the state’s most notable artists with a career that spans over five decades. Working mostly in watercolors, he paints plein air, or on location, throughout the year on large sheets of watercolor paper held down on a table with bricks. Wetting the large-scale paper often means using a bucket of water or a garden hose, depending on his location. “If something goes wrong (with the painting) I attack it with a flood of water from the hose,” says the artist, “I build up the colors and then soften it with the hose.” Burger’s work is inspired by Cezanne, Braque and Picasso, artists who Burger believes to be the innovators in 20th century. He is also inspired by the Gothic and Renaissance imagery and architectural layouts of American and European landscapes. He has traveled throughout New Jersey and around the world to capture the natural images that give him his greatest inspiration.

Burger was born in Pforzheim, Germany in 1925. Six months later, his parents moved to the United States and settled in Irvington, N.J. Burger attended a grammar school that offered art programs and he was immediately intrigued. During high school, a watercolor demonstration by artist Maurice King inspired Burger to use the medium in the bulk of his artwork. Since the age of 15, Burger has created more than 700 oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and collages.
Burger received his master’s in fine arts education from New York University where he studied with the renowned Hale Woodruff, Tony Smith and Reginald Neal. During this time he was inspired both by the innovation of his professors and the momentum of the abstract expressionist movement. In an interview with Harry I. Naar, professor of fine arts and gallery director at Rider University, Burger explains, “I found a deep respect for the energy, sensuality and spontaneity of abstract expressionism. I realized that I could, in fact, create an image about reality and especially the landscape using dramatic colors with stronger brush strokes that captured my true inner feelings about the site.” Burger continues, “I realized that I did not have to be so literal in my depictions to create an image of a landscape. To me, the landscape is always changing and I feel that my style and technique tries to reveal that feeling.”

Burger took postgraduate classes at Columbia University and Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. Burger exhibited work throughout the country including the Lincoln Center and the National Academy of Design in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institute and the Butler Institute of Art in Youngstown, Ohio. His artwork can be seen in various corporate collections including Johnson & Johnson, British Airways, and Nabisco World Headquarters. He taught design and drawing for over 40 years at Kean University in Union, N.J and is now Professor Emeritus.

The Noyes Museum of Art was founded in 1983 to collect, preserve and exhibit American fine art, crafts and folk art with an emphasis on New Jersey artists and folk art forms, reflecting the area's long traditions, history, landscape and culture. General funding for The Noyes Museum of Art is provided by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Arts; the Mr. and Mrs. Fred Winslow Noyes Foundation; the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation; the Odessa F. and Henry D. Kahrs Charitable Trust and the Shop Rite LPGA Classic. The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday,10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m. and closed on Mondays and major holidays. EXPERIENCE SCULPTOR JONATHAN SHAHN HEAD ON AT THE NOYES
The New Jersey Artist Opens New Exhibition at the Oceanville Museum
New Jersey sculptor Jonathan Shahn opens a solo exhibition on November 16 at the Noyes Museum of Art in Oceanville, N.J. The exhibition, titled Jonathan Shahn: Imaginary Portraits, includes sculpted heads, human forms and figures. Working primarily in wood, Shahn literally creates expressions of life - drawing inspiration from classical busts and sculptures, which he merges with faces of people he knows. The sculptures will be on display through January 6, 2008.

Shahn has been creating sculptures and drawings representing the human figure since the early 1960s. His life-sized sculptures, carved from enormous wood blocks or formed from plaster, express the honesty and simple elegance of the human figure. Suggestive of Picasso and Giacometti, Shahn’s oversized heads, often perched on elongated or thick neck-like pedestals or placed within boxes, function as portraits of common people. He prefers to work with wood because it is a “slower, more resistant” material that allows his figures to evolve naturally, but he is also known for his smooth plaster sculptures. Most of his wooden sculptures are completed over months. The rough-hewn figures sometimes receive a paraffin coat or brush marks that the artist describes as “directional patterns” and “anatomical suggestions,” implying African, Egyptian and medieval art that is both classical and clean.

In the tradition of folk art, participants will paint on recycled materials such as cardboard, wood and, here at the Jersey shore, driftwood. Wear your old clothes!

HANDS-ON PERCUSSION WORKSHOP
Facilitated by percussionist Michael Hoebler, this workshop will focus on Afro-Cuban rhythms and drums, and participants will learn the basic techniques of hand drumming, utilizing a variety of different instruments. bette blank

Bette Blank has a Ph.D. in Engineering from U.C. Berkeley, but her art is about the emotions and feelings of everyday life. In 2000, Blank gave up her day job to pursue painting full-time. According to the artist, it was her mother’s death which caused her finally to pursue her dream – and it prompted her to create a painting as well, “Tug of War.” In it, Blank depicted her mother’s hospital room, filled with family, medical personnel, and angels, as showing the “struggle between the living, loved ones and her dead, loved ones (angels.)” Family memories, popular culture (“Annunciation of the War in Iraq” – as seen on TV in a nail salon), and Bible stories are some of Blank’s favorite themes. State of the Arts producer Susan Wallner visits some of sites of Blank’s paintings with her – including a nail salon and two of her favorite restaurants in her hometown of Madison, New Jersey. Although her style has a naïve look, Blank has studied art at the Brooklyn Museum School of Art and the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts among other places. A resident of Madison, New Jersey, she has had solo shows in New York and New Jersey, and her work is in the permanent collection of The Jewish Museum in New York.

The Visualize Photography Foundation launches its website!

Photography is a medium of power. It moves us, beyond the mechanics of light and color. It compels, persuades, documents and entertains. It changes us as it changes the world. Founded in 2007 by working commercial photographers, the Visualize Photography Foundation was created as a resource for photographers and photography consumers, with the goal to advance the craft in all pursuits: professional, amateur, commercial and artistic.

Working in collaboration with the Noyes Museum of Art, the Foundation’s initial focus is the southeastern counties of New Jersey: Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Ocean – with short-term goals to expand to encompass photography throughout New Jersey. The Foundation develops and encourages working photographers and students of photography through collaborative and educational programs including workshops, scholarships and web resources.

Plans to expand the program will include guest lectures from photographers and other key players in the field, portfolio development, traveling exhibitions, field expeditions and publications. Through education, advocacy and professional development, the Foundation aims to raise acceptable standards to a higher level in support and cultivation of outstanding photography.

Please join us at ArtPort on June 5th at 5:30 for the gallery reception. Photographers include: Vernon Ogrodnek, Stephen Schneiderman, John DiMaio, Alex Anton, Donna Conner, Holly Horner, and Bill Horin. Scholarships will be awarded that evening to Atlantic County High School student's.
