Beauty of flight2 area museums partner to show
collection of local aviation art
By DEBORAH M. MARKO Staff Writer dmarko@thedailyjournal.com

After dazzling the Millville Army Air Field Museum home crowd, a celebrated art exhibit now canvases a new neighborhood. "Aviation Art -- The Beauty of Flight" arrived safe recently at the Noyes Museum of Art in Oceanville, where it will be displayed through May 1.

It's the third time the 21-piece exhibit featuring a collection of prints and lithographs illustrating the history, technology and beauty of the war birds of World War II will be publicly shown, said Lisa Jester of the Millville Army Air Field Museum. The exhibit debuted June 2006 at the local army air field museum before it moved downtown to the Millville Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts last November, Jester said.

A local connection made it possible for the exhibit to venture farther afield.
Mike Cagno, who formerly served as executive director of Millville's Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts, stepped down in August to accept a similar position with the Noyes Museum. As the Renaissance Center's director he had endorsed the army airfield museum's application to the Cumberland County Cultural and Heritage Commission for a $4,500 grant to make the traveling exhibit possible.

When the grant was awarded, Cagno was in a position to make that trip possible.
"We were able to adjust the schedule at the Noyes Museum to get it into a newly refurbished wing," Cagno said. For the first time, the army air field museum staff had to construct travel crates and carefully wrap their art in bubble wrap for the 40-mile field trip.
Several thousand people are expected to view the artwork, which may pique their interest in the exhibit's home base in Millville.

This may result in additional foot traffic at the local army air field museum, Jester said.
As familiar as she is with the art, Jester said, the exhibit will be impressive at the Noyes, documenting the people in combat and the historic planes in flight.
"I can't wait to go," Jester said. "I'm 40, I'm not a veteran -- it gets in your heart."
The display moves beyond the Noyes' traditional landscapes and still lifes and brings a historical perspective to the gallery. The exhibit "has strong ties to South Jersey as well as the whole nation," Cagno said. "The quality of work is superb."

Jazz Legends Bios
SAM DOCKERY: Dockery has enjoyed a reputation for being a very hard-swinging, straight ahead player. Dockery, who is originally from Lawnside, NJ, but has spent much of his life in and around Philly, is perhaps best known for 11 recordings with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers. Dockery, a frequent visitor to New York City, was Blakey's pianist after Horace Silver and Kenny Drew Sr., and before Junior Mance or Bobby Timmons. During his stay in that legendary group, Dockery was part of a five-man lineup that included trumpeter Bill Hardman, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean (pre-Blue Note), bassist Spanky DeBest; at times, that quintet became a sextet when Chicago icon Johnny Griffin was added on tenor sax.
The late '50s and early '60s, found him being featured in Philly with tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath's quartet, which employed Buster Williams on bass and Specs Wright on drums. Sam also crossed paths with heavyweight improvisors ranging from trumpeter Clifford Brown to saxophonists Sonny Stitt, Benny Golson & Stan Getz. Bud Powell is a major influence on Dockery, as are Thelonious Monk and Art Tatum.
EARL MAY: May began his career in 1949 in New York City, and honed his craft in places like Minton's Playhouse with musicians such as Lester Young and Mercer Ellington. He was also a protege of the legendary Charles Mingus.
Earl joined the Billy Taylor Trio in 1951, appearing regularly in such clubs as the Hickory House, Birdland and the Downbeat Club. During this period, Earl also worked with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and recorded the classic “Lush Life” with John Coltrane. Earl left the Billy Taylor Trio in 1959, to form his own group and act as musical director and arranger for Gloria Lynne. During the mid-sixties Earl took up the electric bass and led a quartet at the New York City Playboy Club. The Earl May Quartet rapidly became the epitome of great music in the New York club scene. Over the years Earl has performed or recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Foster, Cab Calloway, Tommy Flanigan, Linda Hopkins, Doc Cheatum, Charles Brown, Jon Hendricks, Marlena Shaw, Ruth Brown, Winard Harper and Phyllis Hyman. He is currently featured with the Barry Harris Trio.
FRANK MAZZEO: A New Jersey native, Mazzeo has performed with Frank Sinatra, Patti Austin, Bernadette Peters, Louie Bellson, Bill Watrous, the New Jersey and New York Saxophone Quartets, Mel Louis, Lee Konitz, Randy Newman, Christopher Cross, Patti LaBelle, Tommy Tune, Tony Bennet, Ray Charles, Diahann Carroll, Phyllis Hyman, John Popper of Blues Travelers, Peabo Bryson, Sam Dockery and Earl May. He is the lead alto player at the Walnut Street Theater in Philadelphia, Pa.
BOB FERGUSON: Ferguson has performed throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean for over 20 years as a trumpet soloist and section player. A native of Linwood, New Jersey, Bob began performing in the Atlantic City Club and Hotel scene at the age of 14. Bob began his professional career in 1978 performing in Puerto Rico where he had the opportunity to work with Aldo Mata, Hector Fernandez, Ruben Blades, Gloria Estafan, and members of the Fania All Stars. Since then, Bob has had the opportunity to work with hundreds of Latin and Jazz artists from all idioms of the music business. In the summers of 2005 and 2006 he performed in a tour of Italy with appearances in Rome, Milan and Florence, as well as 8 other cities.
CARL ALLEN: Allen has performed and recorded with Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Jackie McLean, Benny Green, Art Farmer, Vincent Herring, Donald Brown, Cyrus Chestnut, Lena Horne, Donald Byrd, Alto Legacy - Alto Summit, Pete Yellin & The Brooklyn Jazz Machine, and Dewey Redman. Carl has been decribed by the New York Times as “Aggressive without being intrusive, Allen balances the back-and-forth swaying of his rhythmic ideas with hard-boiled swing.”

Four South Jersey artists featured
in Atlantic City International Airport ArtPort Gallery March show

Works by artists from Burlington, Cape May and Gloucester counties on display
Public invited to March. 13 Open House/Gallery Reception from 5:30 to 7:30 in the terminal

EGG HARBOR TWP. – A diverse display of styles are evident this month in the ArtPort Gallery located in the Atlantic City International Airport (ACY).

The works of Carol Taylor-Kearney of Wenonah, Gina C of Sea Isle City, and Steve Kuzma and Rachel Bomze of Marlton are on display for the entire month of March in the unique ArtPort gallery, which opened in the security screening area of the airport in September 2006. More than 35,000 travelers a month move through ACY airport security.

An Open House honoring the March guest artists will be held on Tuesday, March 13. Admission is free and refreshments are provided.

“The ArtPort is broadening it reach into the South Jersey community this month with the selection of artists from Burlington, Gloucester and Cape May counties,” said Bart Mueller, noting that the Atlantic City International Airport serves travelers from all over the state. “Each artist brings their own unique perspective and style to the gallery.”

Gina C, of Sea Isle City, paints land and seascapes, still and floral displays, equine and wildlife subjects and architecturals. Her work has been described as “photo realism” or “hyper realism” as she enjoys giving the attention to detail that this process involves. She has participated in the prestigious Wings ‘n Water Festival in Stone Harbor, New Jersey where she received an Honorable Mention in the watercolor division.

Steve Kuzma of Marlton studied at the Philadelphia College of Art and Parsons The New School of Design in New York City. He graduated with honors from Parsons and was awarded fellowships to study overseas in Sienna, Italy and Paris, France. Beginning his career in illustration, he worked for clients such as KLM Airways and Salin Linbald Cruises. Art directors were particularly fond of his work as it incorporated a strong sense of color and motion, reflecting Steve’s strong interest in sports and his great love of the outdoors. The New York Times, New York Marathon, and Sport Monday commissioned his artwork and it has been featured in numerous publications. He maintains a studio in Marlton, New Jersey.
Carol Taylor-Kearney of Wenonah is a life-long resident of southern New Jersey who specializes in
found objects and found ideas. She creates her art on windows that have been discarded. The panes are in a technique called reverse painting on glass, while the sashes are carved and painted. They hang from the chains that fit window to casement. A graduate of Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ (BA Art Education) and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia (MFA Painting), she has exhibited her work regionally; and her work is part of several corporate, public, and private collections. In this past year Carol has exhibited her work in a solo exhibition at ETS Connant Hall Gallery in Princeton, NJ; and in juried group exhibitions at Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, CT; the Delaware Center for Creative Arts in Wilmington, DE; and in Visions of Liberty at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

Rachel Bomze of Marlton received her M.F.A. in painting at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Elkins Park, PA. She currently teaches drawing courses at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ. She also teaches art classes at the Perkins Art Center in Moorestown, NJ. Rachel’s work was recently exhibited at the Isadore Gallery in Lancaster, PA. She also exhibited work at Cumberland County College in Vineland, NJ, and at Gallery 216 at Rowan University. She currently has work up at the D’jango Restaurant in Philadelphia, PA, organized by inliquid.com.
The Atlantic City International Airport has experienced an increase in passengers over the last several years, with about a million passengers moving through the airport annually. SJTA estimates that utilization of the airport could increase by double digits in the next couple of years with the expected addition of new airlines and new airline routes.

In order to accommodate this expected growth, the Authority is in the midst of a major expansion and improvement program that includes renovation and expansion of the terminal building and the construction of a 1,400-space parking garage just steps from the terminal.
